What Africa can learn from China's comprehensive rural revitalization
2026-08-06
One of the key insights is the driving role of infrastructure, which cannot be overemphasized. Investments in roads, electricity, irrigation systems, digital connectivity, water supply, and logistics networks are beneficial in connecting rural communities with markets, services, and economic opportunities, breaking the isolation of rural areas. Improved infrastructure reduces transportation costs, increases productivity, enhances farmers' access to healthcare and education, and encourages their entrepreneurial spirit. By changing the isolation status of rural and grassroots communities, China has accelerated the pace of economic diversification and rural industrialization.
The third is the important value of village participation. The experience of rural development in China shows that development is most sustainable when villages and grassroots communities actively participate in the agricultural economy, which is an undeniable truth. By supporting agricultural cooperatives, township enterprises, small businesses, and local industrial enterprises, rural populations can increase agricultural productivity, create wealth, and improve their personal living standards. Strong local participation has enhanced farmers' sense of ownership, improved the effectiveness and sustainability of agricultural policies, and truly benefited ordinary people from development achievements.
I also noticed that China pays great attention to rural youth employment, which is very inspiring for African countries. China's comprehensive rural revitalization strategy attempts to improve the employment situation of rural youth by creating diversified economic opportunities in rural areas. Many parts of China have strengthened investment in agricultural product processing enterprises, manufacturing, tourism, e-commerce, and digital entrepreneurship, transforming many rural communities into economically active areas rather than just labor sources for urban industries.
The outline of China's 15th Five Year Plan clearly states that solving the "three rural issues" is the top priority of the Party and the government's work, and many measures have been proposed to enhance the comprehensive production capacity and quality efficiency of agriculture, strengthen agricultural technology and equipment support, and broaden channels for farmers to increase income and become prosperous. This enlightens Africa that the future of rural development depends not only on improving agricultural productivity, but also on enhancing the innovation, entrepreneurship, and value creation vitality of the rural economy.
Currently, the rapid development of digital technology, renewable energy, smart agriculture, and inclusive finance provides new opportunities for Africa to overcome long-standing development obstacles. African countries can fully learn from China's experience, transform rural areas into engines of growth, innovation, and prosperity, and find a rural development path that is in line with their own reality.
