Understanding the Competitiveness of Made in China by Examining an Air Conditioner Production Line

2026-07-22

Since this year, in the face of a complex and severe external environment and the rising pressure of global trade protectionism, China's foreign trade has grown strongly and steadily. In the first half year, the scale of import and export exceeded 25 trillion yuan for the first time in the same period in history, showing new advantages in export product structure and supply chain response speed.
Recently, many people may have noticed the news that this summer, because of the hot weather, cool home appliances made in China have been favored and snapped up around the world, and the competitiveness of Chinese manufacturing has once again shown. Come on, look at an air conditioner production line.
The response speed of the industrial chain returns in seconds.
Made in China highlights new advantages
Recently, many countries around the world have continued to experience high temperatures, and air conditioners are becoming a new and urgent necessity. At an air conditioning plant in Qingdao, Shandong Province, a "big order" from France has made the production line busier.
Zheng Guangxiang, head of product technology at Haier air conditioner connected factory in Jiazhou: European orders have been in a surge recently, and just a French order of 70,000 units was received the other day.
In the face of a sudden increase in orders, the chief appeared confident. Why can we take 70,000 urgent orders? The answer lies first and foremost in this flexible production line.
CCTV reporter Gao Yuan: The production line was still producing air conditioners destined for Colombia yesterday, and it has started producing air-conditioners destining for France today. In flexible production factories, production lines can be switched very quickly between production models in different countries.
Retaining urgent orders depends not only on fast production line adjustment, but also on unique designs adapted to local needs. The reporter saw that in order to adapt to European environmental requirements, the empty adjustment machines sold to Europe have been redesigned.
Haier air-conditioning market business leader Xu Kaixuan: the overall cooperation to achieve A + + + energy efficiency. It saves 42% of the electricity used in the same room for an hour compared to a regular air conditioner.
The reporter saw in Qingdao that it was not one company or one process, but the entire industrial chain that needed to cope with the heat wave. At a circuit board company near the air conditioning plant, researchers redesigned air conditioning circuit boards for the European market.
Wang Zhenyu, Head of Orders for the Kaous Creative IoT Jiaozhou Interconnected Factory: We have added an intelligent AI control program that can dynamically adjust the frequency of compressor operation, thereby significantly reducing start-up energy consumption and low-frequency, inefficient losses.Compared with the traditional scheme, we can achieve a reduction of energy consumption of the entire machine by more than 35%, while the energy efficiency ratio is also increased by 15%, and the temperature difference can be controlled within 0.4 ° C.
Along the production line, looking at the industrial chain, Qingdao has formed a complete and advanced smart home appliance production network. On this network, more than 2,200 enterprises have been gathered, including 52 national R & D innovation carriers, 17 national manufacturing champions and products.
Not only Qingdao, customs data shows that in the first half of this year, China's air conditioning, electric fans, refrigerators and other household electrical appliances exports totaled 107.91 billion yuan, for the global consumers sent bursts of "cool."
China's new export business card behind the new tax code
In addition to cool products, more and more new faces have emerged on the "cargo list" of Chinese manufacturing to the sea this year. In the previous two years, electric passenger cars, lithium batteries and solar cells were called the "new three" for export, while in the first half of this year, robotics, artificial intelligence and innovative drugs representing the future industry direction are emerging as the new business card for China's foreign trade.
The reporter found in the interview that this year, the cleaning robot has a proprietary sea customs number. What are the new changes behind a small tax number for Chinese manufacturing to go to sea?
At a robot company in Wuzhong district of Suzhou, a shipment of floor sweeping robots that are about to be shipped to Europe are being inspected by customs. Upon completion of the inspection, the products will depart for overseas markets. Starting this year, the cleaning robots have added a separate tax code number and have a clearer "identity card number."
Liang Hu, deputy chief of inspection division 2 of Suzhou Customs Office in Wuzhong: With the tax number, the classification of cleaning robot products will be more precise, which will greatly help enterprises to declare compliance and simplify the customs clearance process.
A proprietary tax number corresponds to a fast-growing export category. At a factory in Suzhou that started production in the first half of the year, orders for cleaning robots were already in place for December, half of which came from overseas markets.
Li Jiang, production manager of the Covos Robotics Intelligent Manufacturing Center: At present, only one factory building has opened on the campus. Our second phase of the factory is expected to be put into operation after the year, and the planned capacity is already 7.5 million units.
Why is the new category growing so fast? Speed of innovation is key. In Wuzhong District, where the enterprise is located, a customized bus line with a length of 8 kilometers runs from the Suzhou Research Institute of H.I.U., connecting talent apartments, research institutes and robot enterprises along the way, and reaches the Robotics Comprehensive Innovation Center. Engineers from different suppliers such as radar, sensors, and casings are collaborating on research and development every day around the functions of intelligent navigation, long-lasting and low-consumption operation of a new generation of clean robots.
Wu Qi, global product director at Covus Robotics: From the past nine-month project cycle, we can shorten the project cycle to as fast as six months. From the past one generation of products in a year, we can now rapidly iterate to two generations of core products a year.
In Wuzhong District, Suzhou, with robot OEM enterprises as the core, more than 1,600 enterprises related to "robotics + intelligent manufacturing" have been gathered, and every link in the industrial chain is speeding up the export of products to the sea.
Li Si, director of industrial development of Wuzhong Economic and Technological Development Zone in Suzhou: We have attracted upstream and downstream enterprises such as laser radar, sensors and core motors around cleaning robots, effectively shortening the supply chain radius to within 10 kilometers, further enhancing the competitiveness of the industry.
Not only cleaning robots, with China's robot industry to achieve leapfrog development, the scale of exports continued to expand, customs data show that in the first half of this year, China's cleaning robots and intelligent bionic robot exports a total of 18.09 billion yuan. At the same time, China exported 6.29 billion yuan of industrial robots, an increase of 18.6%, to 141 countries and regions around the world, and 480 million yuan of surgical robots, an increase of 3.3 times. The number of export markets increased from 23 to 49 in the same period last year.
More diverse and more connected
The “WeChat Moments” for foreign trade continues to expand.
In the first half of this year, in the face of a complex and volatile external environment, China's foreign trade enterprises continued to explore new markets and seek new partners. From growing international routes at coastal ports to expanding freight lines, a more diversified and tightly knit trade network is taking shape.
In the first half of this year, the Port of Yantian added 10 international routes, covering trade markets such as Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East. From new port partners to expanding shipping routes, more and more markets are being integrated into the global supply chain network of our companies.
Shen Qicheng, managing director of Salt Tin International: We accurately match the rapidly growing demand for ships. The eastern operation area of Yantian Port is about to start production, linking the central, western and eastern operations areas to carry out integrated operations, continuously promoting digitalization and green upgrading.
Trade networks in coastal ports are spreading in more directions, and routes to international markets in inland areas are expanding at a faster pace. At the central station of the China Railway Union Station in Wuhan, a fully loaded China-Europe freight train is loading and rolling. The train will be bound for Germany via the Almaty Pass. In the first half of this year, the China-Europe freight train (Wuhan) sent 238 trips, an increase of 21.4% year-on-year.
Zheng Yital, Marketing Department, Wuhan Railway Logistics Center, Wuhan Bureau of State Railways: Two new stable lines were added in the first half of this year: One was the "Wuhan-Denmark Copenhagen" line, which opened on January 1, mainly transporting new wind converters, furniture, etc.; Second, the "Wuhan-Baku, Azerbaijan" line, which opened on March 31, mainly transports auto parts and daily groceries, increased the number of scheduled trains from 8 to 9 a week.
The new line brought new markets and attracted more sources of goods. Cars and parts from Chongqing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and other places can reach Wuhan by water transport through the Yangtze River, and are sent directly to Europe and Central Asia by rail. There is no need for short-distance road transfer, the transportation time is shortened by more than two days, and the comprehensive logistics cost is reduced by about 15%.
Zheng Yilang, Marketing Department, Wuhan Railway Logistics Center, Wuhan Bureau of State Railways: Many customers actively choose train transport, and the train can reach the core European markets such as Poland, Germany, Italy in about 15 days, helping enterprises quickly fill the local supply gap.
From new international routes to trains heading to new destinations, more and more Chinese companies are finding new trading partners. Statistics released by the General Administration of Customs show that in the first half of this year, China's imports and exports to countries along the Belt and Road reached 12.97 trillion yuan, an increase of 14.8 percent year on year. Imports and exports to neighboring countries increased by 20.6%, while imports and spending to Latin America, Africa and the European Union increased by 16.2%, 19.6% and 10.2% respectively.
Exploiting the internal driving forces of development
Enhancing the steady growth of foreign trade
From the ability to respond to urgent orders to the new products behind the new tax code, China's strength in foreign trade is not only reflected in the growth of scale, but also in transforming market changes into development opportunities by taking driving forces from innovation, taking space from diversification, and taking efficiency from industrial chain coordination.
Responding to external uncertainty with its own certainty is the foundation for China's foreign trade to move forward steadily. (Outlook New Era)
