Recently, the 16th contingent of Chinese peacekeeping medical personnel dispatched to South Sudan (Wau) comprised key personnel from departments such as internal medicine and surgery, who formed a mobile medical team to travel to the Kovachok region of UNISFA and provide medical screening services to peacekeeping personnel stationed at various locations.

The Kovachok detachment site is more than 70 kilometers away from the Waou mission area, and certain sections of the route are difficult to traverse. The medical team, carrying essential medications and diagnostic equipment, overcame adverse conditions such as high temperatures and challenging terrain to arrive at the detachment site on time. Upon arrival, the team quickly set up a temporary medical facility, and various tasks were carried out in an orderly manner.

In response to the unique characteristics of peacekeeping personnel, who often spend extended periods in outdoor environments and are prone to skin and digestive system disorders, as well as sports injuries, the mobile medical team conducted thorough consultations and physical examinations for each member of the personnel, providing professional medical services that included specialized treatments and personalized medication recommendations. Additionally, taking into account the epidemiological patterns in the mission area, the medical team focused on targeted health education related to malaria prevention, protection against heat-related illnesses, and hygiene measures for outdoor work. They patiently answered the health-related questions posed by the personnel.

During this round of medical visits, over 30 individuals were treated, and more than 200 boxes of various medications were distributed. During the medical visits, the medical team also provided on-site guidance on the inventory of medical supplies in the outpost’s medical room and the implementation of sanitation and epidemic prevention measures.

The head of my peacekeeping detachment stated that the subsequent medical detachment will conduct routine outpatient services at the detachment sites, continuously optimize the medical support model, and use professional skills to safeguard the health of peacekeeping personnel, thus fulfilling the mission of peacekeeping through practical actions.
