Chinese AI Technologies Shine on the FIFA World Cup Pitch

2026-07-22

Overseas media have dubbed the 2026 FIFA World Cup the largest real-world deployment of enterprise-grade artificial intelligence to date. At the private forum “Beyond the Pitch — China-U.S. Business, Artificial Intelligence and Global Collaboration” held in the United States on July 20 local time, Deng Qingxu, CEO of Sina Finance, said Chinese brands are undergoing a fundamental shift in how they participate in top-tier global sporting events.
Within FIFA’s global core partnership ecosystem, Chinese enterprise Lenovo Group undertakes multiple key tasks: AI enhancement for Referee View footage, AI analytics tools for all 48 participating teams, and the deployment, operation and maintenance of over 25,000 devices across 16 stadiums.
“From ‘sponsor’ to ‘technology partner’, from ‘being seen’ to ‘being needed’. This upgrade is not unique to one single enterprise; it serves as a microcosm of the rising global competitiveness of China’s tech companies,” Deng Qingxu remarked.

Q1: Why is it hailed as “the First AI World Cup”?

“The World Cup has long transcended being merely a sports tournament. It has become an unprecedented large-scale real-world testing ground for AI in human history,” said Chan Mei Yee, Vice President of Lenovo Group and Head of Application Service Delivery, Solutions and Services Group (SSG).
Data shows this World Cup has expanded to 48 teams competing in 104 matches hosted across 16 cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, spanning nearly 4,000 kilometers from north to south. The tournament will generate nearly 8 petabytes (PB) of match footage and player motion data. Daily Token consumption during the event will reach 15.84 trillion, accounting for approximately 3% of global total AI computing demand over the same period.
“Leveraging innovative technologies, we have built a solid and reliable AI technical foundation and developed multiple tailor-made AI solutions for this World Cup, making the 2026 U.S.-Canada-Mexico World Cup the true ‘First AI World Cup’,” Chan Mei Yee stated.

Q2: Which AI technologies have been validated at the tournament?

“For team preparation, we developed FIFA Football AI Pro, the World Cup’s advanced football AI super agent. It can access millions of data points in real time and analyze more than 2,000 match metrics, compressing post-match analysis that previously took two days into less than two hours. It enables coaching staff to swiftly complete match reviews, opponent profiling and tactical planning,” Chan Mei Yee explained.
The system is offered free of charge to all 48 participating World Cup teams, breaking the data service divide in global football. It allows developing-nation teams with limited budgets and lean professional teams to access world-class AI tactical capabilities.
In terms of match broadcasting and officiating explanation, Lenovo’s self-developed AI video enhancement system for Referee View has secured two core patents. It cuts video processing latency from the industry’s typical 6–15 seconds to under 2 seconds.
“Furthermore, it delivers an average image stabilization effect of 50%, peaking at 70%, effectively mitigating frame shake under high-intensity on-pitch collisions. It provides stable, crisp and reliable first-person footage for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and global broadcast feeds,” Chan Mei Yee added.

Q3: Will tournament-proven AI capabilities be transferred to other sectors?

“The World Cup deployment is not an end, but a starting point for large-scale AI rollout,” Chan Mei Yee noted.
Following the path of “validation in premium scenarios — consolidation of standardized solutions — large-scale replication and promotion”, the hybrid AI capabilities proven during the tournament are being migrated to real economy sectors including manufacturing, energy, transportation and healthcare.
In healthcare, Lenovo has built a smart medical digital infrastructure in partnership with West China Hospital of Sichuan University, delivering clinical-grade business continuity guarantees. In the energy sector, Lenovo robots paired with virtual deployment tools have rolled out intelligent inspection solutions for China Southern Power Grid and State Grid, drastically shortening deployment cycles.
“We will accelerate the application of tournament-tested AI capabilities in real-economy industries such as manufacturing and energy, advancing AI into universally accessible productive power for all,” Chan Mei Yee said. (Outlook New Era)
