In 2026, it will be five years since the Tianhe core module of the Chinese Space Station was launched into orbit. This national space laboratory, located at an altitude of 400 kilometers, carries out a variety of missions, including space science experiments, astronaut stays, science popularization, and international cooperation. With the increasing number of scientific research projects and the deepening of foreign cooperation, existing space and functions are becoming difficult to meet development needs. According to the plan, the Chinese space station will start the expansion project in the future, and gradually upgrade from the current "T" configuration to create a space platform with more complete functions and stronger comprehensive capabilities. What is the overall plan for China's space station expansion? What are the difficulties? What is the value after the expansion?
1. Expanded space was set aside
Many people will wonder why China's space station has not been built for a long time, so why should it start upgrading and expanding? In fact, this is not a temporary decision, as early as the design, the research team set aside space for the space station to expand, and the expansion is an established part of the manned space engineering plan.
First, the demand for scientific research continues to grow. The core function of the space station is to conduct various space experiments. Thanks to the unique environment of space, research teams at home and abroad have submitted more and more experiments, and the existing experimental areas and supporting equipment are becoming saturated. In order for more cutting-edge research to be carried out smoothly, we must expand the space and increase the supporting facilities. Second, the journey between space and land is becoming more and more busy. The Shenzhou manned spacecraft and the Tianzhou cargo spacecraft need to visit the space station regularly to complete the rotation of personnel and supplies. At present, the number of berth locations available is limited, and "queue berths" may occur during mission intensive situations, which not only affects operational efficiency, but also lacks sufficient emergency buffer space, and new berth locations are imperative.
Again, it is suitable for long-term regular operation. China's space station is scheduled to serve in orbit for a long time, and at this stage it can ensure the daily work and life of three astronauts at the same time. In the future, the number of resident people and the number of hours of work in orbit will gradually increase, and supporting conditions such as living, exercise and emergency safety need to be improved to make astronauts' lives in orbit more comfortable and their operations safer. Finally, expand integrated service capacity. In addition to conducting various experiments, the space station can also undertake on-orbit service work such as spacecraft maintenance and equipment maintenance. The existing layout has limitations in outer space operations and cargo storage, and after the expansion, it can further enrich its functions and develop toward an integrated space hub.
2. Building blocks in space
China's space station adopts a mature modular construction model, which is like "building blocks" in space, and is implemented step by step throughout the whole process. At present, the space station is composed of Tianhe core module, Wentian lab module and Mengtian lab module, which are in the standard "T" configuration. The division of labor is clear: the core module is operated as a whole station, while the other two lab modules focus on different fields such as life science and material physics.
In the first phase of the expansion, it is planned to add an integrated cabin section, which will change the overall configuration of the station from the "T" word to the "ten." The new segment is not simply an increase in activity space, but a multifunctional capsule that integrates docking, experimentation, outgoing operations and life security. After its completion, not only will the spacecraft have more docking locations, but it can realize the simultaneous presence of multiple aircraft, the channels for astronauts to leave the capsule will also increase, and multiple people to perform extra-capsule work in synchrony will become the norm, and the experimental equipment and storage space will also be expanded at the same time. During this period, the space telescope will also operate in conjunction with the space station, carrying out astronomical observations with the help of the space station's guarantees. After completing the first phase of upgrading and stabilizing operation, we will continue to advance medium- and long-term plans to add new sections to create a larger six-space complex. At that time, the division of labor among various segments will be more detailed, scientific experiments in different fields can be carried out in a subdivision, and the scale of astronaut presence will be increased correspondingly.
The biggest feature of the entire expansion package is the universal design, with the standard of all sections and interfaces unified. After the new sections are connected, they can quickly adapt to the original system, without making significant changes to the existing facilities, which reduces difficulty and improves operational stability.
3. It's far more difficult than you might think.
Remodeling buildings on the ground is relatively simple, but under the high-speed spaceflight state, the space station's expansion is far more difficult than imagined, and no mistakes can be tolerated at every step.
The first difficulty is the docking of large sections. The tens of tons of capsules need to do precise docking in space, and the requirements for flight control and sensing navigation are extremely high. It is necessary to ensure that the docking is smooth and cannot damage the capsule and internal equipment, and to avoid the vibration and noise generated by the docking, which affects astronauts and precision instruments in orbit.
The second is station-wide posture and state stability. The weight, center of gravity and shape of the original space station are already in a stable state, and the overall balance will be changed when the new module is added. There are external disturbances such as thin atmosphere and space debris in space, and small effects can be magnified, and the posture needs to be adjusted in real time throughout the whole process to ensure the smooth operation of the entire station.
Once again, system compatibility and energy supply issues need to be addressed. After the new phase is connected, energy, communication, and temperature control systems must perfectly cooperate with the original equipment, and cannot suffer from signal interference, insufficient power supply, and local overheating. As the number of equipment increases and the demand for electricity increases, it is also necessary to upgrade the electricity supply and heat dissipation related facilities in the same time. At the same time, after the completion of the expansion, the equipment, pipelines and structures in the station have become more complex, and the difficulty of daily inspection, fault investigation and equipment repair will increase, and higher requirements have been put forward for on-orbit operation and emergency disposal capabilities.
4. It will play a greater role
The expansion and upgrading is not only the simple "bigization," but also the comprehensive capability improvement, and the space station will undertake more important missions in the future.
First, scientific research reached a new level. The larger space and more equipment can simultaneously undertake a greater number of experimental projects in a broader range of fields, from life sciences and aerospace medicine to new materials and astronomical observations, all kinds of research can be successfully advanced. The results of many space experiments can also be converted to the ground, helping the industrial development of medical care, manufacturing, new materials and other industries, so that space technology benefits the public. Second, deepen international space cooperation. The Chinese space station has always adhered to openness and sharing, opening its doors to countries and scientific research institutions around the world. After the expansion, more experiment seats and resident space can accommodate overseas scientific research projects and astronauts, becoming a public platform for the joint exploration of the universe by all mankind. Third, it will help the development of deep space exploration. The space station is an excellent test site for new technologies. New equipment and new solutions needed for future manned missions to the moon, lunar research station, and Mars exploration can be tested at the space station first, paving the way for travel to the farthest reaches of the stars and seas. Fourth, enhance on-orbit service capabilities. The upgraded space station can provide fuel supply, equipment maintenance and other services for small satellites and detectors in low-Earth orbit, driving the industrial development of commercial space and in-orbit services. Fifth, we should continue the mission of science education in space. The Tiangong Classroom has long become a popular science brand loved by teenagers. After the upgrade of conditions, science popularization activities such as space interaction, space experiments, and live streaming in orbit will be more enriched, continuously igniting children's scientific enthusiasm and space dreams.
From the initial three-space configuration to the continuous expansion and upgrading, the growth of China's space station epitomizes the steady development of China's manned spaceflight. In the future, the escalating Tiangong will continue to cultivate scientific research, embrace international cooperation, and spread the space spirit. This space home, 400 kilometers from the ground, will not only be China's outpost for exploring the stars, but will also become an important platform for all mankind to join hands to move to the cosmos. Looking up at the stars and standing on the ground, China's space exploration path will go further. (Looking ahead to a new era)
