China will accelerate the ecological cultivation of the space computing industry

2026-04-07

With the explosive growth in demand for artificial intelligence computing power and the accelerated deployment of global low orbit satellite constellations, space computing power has become a new frontier in global technological competition and is at a critical stage of transitioning from technology validation to large-scale deployment. Space computing power involves multiple fields such as computing chips, inter satellite communication, energy supply and heat dissipation, and satellite manufacturing. ”Recently, at the 2026 Space Computing Industry Conference held in Beijing Economic Development Zone (Yizhuang), Zhao Ce, Deputy Director of the Information and Communication Development Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, pointed out that space computing has multiple advantages such as real-time processing in orbit, low-cost energy, and wide area coverage, which can help improve the efficiency of "days" processing, enhance space energy development capabilities, expand network application boundaries, and have strategic value and industrial prospects. In recent years, China has gradually carried out the construction and pilot verification of space computing power constellation, accelerated the technological research and development of on-board intelligent computing chips and inter satellite laser communication, and carried out multiple constellation networking plans in an orderly manner. Experimental satellites have been verified in orbit, and large-scale models have been steadily deployed in orbit. "Industry university research" cooperation has deepened, and the industrial ecology has gradually been constructed. Yu Guobin, Deputy Director of the Commercial Space Department of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, revealed at the meeting that the National Space Administration has led the launch of the special demonstration and expert group meeting on space intelligent computing power constellation, and the relevant work is currently being carried out in an orderly manner. Yu Guobin mentioned that developing space computing power is a strategic choice to break through the bottleneck of ground computing power and ensure the sustainable development of the digital economy. Specifically, traditional ground data centers face multiple bottlenecks such as high energy consumption, tight land resources, high heat dissipation costs, and limited coverage, making it difficult to meet the computing power needs of future large-scale, green, low-carbon, and global coverage. Developing space computing power can fundamentally break the energy and space constraints of ground computing power and provide a new type of computing power supply that is zero carbon, green, sustainable, and widely covered for the digital economy. It is worth mentioning that the space intelligent computing constellation can also achieve seamless global coverage and integrated connectivity between heaven and earth, providing real-time intelligent space-based information services for emergency disaster relief, ocean observation, aviation and shipping, polar scientific research, and more. We should not only seize the potential opportunities of space computing as an emerging industry, but also actively respond to challenges in chip performance, inter satellite communication, energy supply, and heat dissipation. We should strengthen system planning, make forward-looking layouts, deepen industrial cultivation, further coordinate efforts, and solidly and orderly promote the development of the space computing industry. ”Zhao Ce stated. He suggested deepening departmental collaboration, organizing research on technological evolution and industrial trends, planning policy measures to guide the construction and application of space computing power, and strengthening mechanism guarantees. At the same time, we will strengthen innovation driven efforts, accelerate technological breakthroughs and engineering verification. Support relevant units to actively carry out forward-looking research on space computing technology, gradually establish a standard system covering software and hardware, network, security and other aspects, promote the research and development of technologies and products such as spaceborne anti radiation chips and inter satellite laser communication, enhance full stack technology capabilities, and consolidate the foundation of industrial development. Zhao Ce also proposed to strengthen application traction, cultivate application scenarios and service models. Including exploring the application of space computing power in scenarios such as real-time remote sensing processing, communication enhancement, and spatiotemporal information, and exploring innovative integrated services for "communication and remote computing"; Support in orbit data processing in areas such as low altitude economy and emergency communication, and accelerate technological iteration and commercial cycles through practical scenario applications; Promote the integrated development of computing power and satellite Internet, and accelerate the ecological cultivation of space computing power industry. At the meeting, the industry's first collaborative platform for the space computing industry, the "Space Computing Professional Committee," was officially established. Space computing power is the extension and integration of ground industries in space, and it is the forefront layout for building a global ubiquitous computing power network, which will strongly support the high-quality development of applications such as artificial intelligence. "Li Jie, Deputy Director of Yunda Institute of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, introduced that the committee will promote related work around strategic research, technological breakthroughs, standard development and other directions. In addition, the "Beijing Space Computing Innovation Center" was launched at the conference with the aim of creating a key technology innovation platform. Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone has also officially released the "List of Key Common Technologies for Space Computing", focusing on the core links of the industrial chain and further driving technological breakthroughs with real industrial needs.
